Burnley have sacked head coach Nicky Hayen.

The Belgian took charge in the summer but has overseen just one win from their club's first 12 Championship fixtures and the Clarets were beaten 4-1 at Lincoln on Saturday.

Hayen apologised to the Burnley supporters for the performance after the game.

In pre-season, Burnley had been among the favourites for promotion and to make an immediate return to the Premier League but are third-bottom and in the Championship relegation zone. They have the joint-worst defensive record in the league.

A 26-word statement from Burnley announcing his sacking read:

"Burnley Football Club has dismissed head coach Nicky Hayen with immediate effect. The Board has taken the decision following a disappointing start to the Championship season."

Hayen's reign began with a Carabao Cup penalty shootout win over League One Notts County but they were knocked out in the next round on spot kicks by Bradford.

Hayen's only other win came in a 4-0 victory at Watford on October 10.

Speaking to the media following the loss to Lincoln, Hayen said: "It's the same story of the season for us that we keep conceding easy goals and you saw that in the second half.

"They want to work hard, but you have to show it. What we do in training is really good, but we can't execute that the same way in the games. Is that pressure? I don't know.

"It's frustrating for everyone, especially the fans. I want to apologise to them, but I know it doesn't matter because it's another hard defeat for them and I can understand their criticism.

"We haven't got the results. I will keep on working hard as long as I have the chance. But there will be a day if it carries on like this that it stops.

"I don't know (if I will still be in charge). I know it's a really tough defeat and something to think about for the board."
