Manchester City are close to completing the signings of England internationals Niamh Charles and Beth Mead.

Charles has agreed terms and completed a medical with WSL champions City after a fee was accepted by Chelsea.

The defender has one year left on her contract with the west London club. She has won five WSL titles since joining from Liverpool in 2020.

Meanwhile, Mead will join Manchester City on a free transfer when her contract at Arsenal expires at the end of the month.

Mead, who joined the Gunners from Sunderland in 2017, made 265 appearances for the club, scoring 86 goals.

She spent nine seasons in north London, where she won the 2018/19 Women's Super League title and also the Champions League in 2025.

Both Charles and Mead featured in England's 3-0 win over Ukraine on Tuesday, with Mead scoring the Lionesses' third goal.

Man City making statement of intent

Analysis by Sky Sports' Charlotte Marsh:

After the FA Cup final, Manchester City boss Andree Jeglertz said he wanted to keep developing his team so they can compete again in upcoming seasons.

Signing two players with significant WSL and international experience, Manchester City are making a statement of intent.

Charles will likely become the starting left-back after Leila Ouahabi's departure this summer. Alex Greenwood can also play there and has done so for England, but she plays centrally for her club.

Charles has struggled for game time under Sonia Bompastor. After three consecutive seasons where she featured in over 20 WSL matches under Emma Hayes, she has made just 12 and 11 league appearances respectively in the last two years, with injuries also playing their part.

Chelsea's signing of Katie McCabe will also have further reduced her opportunities to play and at 26, Charles has the perfect blend of youth and winning nous having won 12 major titles with the Blues.

Mead offers competition and depth on the wings, adding to the likes of Lauren Hemp, Kerolin and Aoba Fujino among Jeglertz's options. It also sees her back in the same team as her partner, Vivianne Miedema.

The 31-year-old too has found game time at Arsenal harder to come by in the last 12 months, and there were media reports she was close to leaving the Gunners last summer.

That has now come to fruition and with Champions League and Euros titles under her belt, gives Jeglertz a quality choice when he rotates as Manchester City add European football to their schedule next season.
